BBL Laser Treatment in Belfast and Northern Ireland

Pigmentation, redness and sun damage settle into the skin over years and resist topical correction. BBL is a precision light therapy that targets pigment and vascular concerns directly, lifting unwanted brown spots and calming diffuse redness in a single course. At Array Aesthetics, every BBL laser treatment is delivered on Sciton's BBL HERO platform inside our RQIA-regulated Belfast clinic, calibrated to your skin type by an experienced doctor-led team.

Forever Young BBL uses BBL HEROic's advanced BroadBand Light® technology to target the visible signs of ageing and sun damage, stimulating skin cells to regenerate and restore a more youthful appearance. The treatment reduces fine lines and wrinkles, eliminates age spots, sunspots and freckles, corrects pigment and vascular conditions, improves tone and texture, treats active acne, and reduces unwanted hair, all with lasting results.

Sessions take approximately 30 to 45 minutes depending on the treatment area. CoolComfort™ technology keeps the experience comfortable throughout, with most patients noticing only a mild warming or tingling sensation as the handpiece passes across the skin. Afterwards, some warmth may be felt for 30 to 60 minutes, but the treatment requires minimal downtime and normal activities can be resumed immediately.

Why stop at your face? ForeverBody™ extends the same benefits across the body, treating age spots, sun damage, redness and dull skin on the arms, legs, chest, shoulders and beyond. Powered by the Sciton BBL HERO system, it is a no-downtime procedure that can address multiple areas in a single session, with results visible within two to four weeks and no anaesthetic cream required.

For face-only treatment, a course of three BBL sessions is available to book online without a prior consultation. Your consultation will be carried out at your first appointment.

BBL Laser Treatment Overview

BBL stands for BroadBand Light, a clinical-grade light therapy from Sciton that targets pigment, redness and the early signs of skin ageing using calibrated wavelengths. BBL HERO is one of the most advanced version of the technology, with higher peak power and integrated CoolComfort cooling for shorter, more comfortable sessions. The skin is clearer, brighter and more even-toned, without the downtime of deeper resurfacing, and the cumulative shift in tone and clarity tends to land around the third session.

How BBL Laser Treatments Work

During a session, your clinician glides the BBL HERO handpiece across the treatment area while pulses of broadband light are absorbed by pigment and small vessels within the skin. The light energy gently heats the targeted cells, which the body then clears through its natural healing response over the following days. The same pulse stimulates fibroblast activity in the deeper layers, encouraging collagen renewal and improved tone over time. Treatments take 30 to 45 minutes, and you can return to normal activities immediately afterwards.

Choosing BBL Laser Treatments

Patients choose BBL when topical skincare has reached its limit. Pigmentation, sun damage and visible redness sit at depths that creams and serums cannot reach, and broadband light therapy is one of the few non-ablative tools that can correct both pigment and vascular concerns in the same session. The result is clearer, more even-toned skin without the recovery of deeper resurfacing. Where you have your BBL course matters too: outcomes depend on how precisely the BBL HERO settings are calibrated to your individual skin type and concerns.

Array's light therapy service is led by Nurse Practitioners Dominique Shore (NMC: 12J0185N) and Trish Short (NMC: 19I0787N), within a multi-doctor team co-founded by Dr Chris Hutton and Dr Judith Storm.  Array Aesthetics is a three-time winner of Best Clinic Ireland & Northern Ireland at The Aesthetics Awards (2023, 2024, 2026).

BBL Laser Treatments vs. Other Treatments

BBL works at the surface and upper dermis, which makes it the right choice for pigmentation, diffuse redness, sun damage and the early visible signs of ageing. Fractional resurfacing options such as HALO and NanoLaserPeel reach deeper into the dermis to address textural concerns, fine lines and acne scarring. Energy-based treatments such as Morpheus8 and Ultherapy address skin laxity at structural depths broadband light cannot reach.

You are a candidate for BBL if your primary concerns are sun-induced pigmentation, freckling, diffuse redness or broken capillaries, and your skin type sits between Fitzpatrick I and IV. HALO is the stronger option if textural irregularities, acne scarring or fine lines are your main concern. Morpheus8 or Ultherapy are appropriate when the goal is to tighten loose or lax skin. Your clinician will guide you to the right starting point at your assessment.

Complementary Treatments

BBL pairs naturally with treatments that work at depths the light cannot reach. Many Array patients sequence broadband light therapy with HALO laser resurfacing for combined surface clarity and dermal renewal, or with Morpheus8 microneedling to address skin laxity alongside pigmentation. Polynucleotides and Profhilo can be added between sessions to support skin quality and hydration from the inside out. Your clinician will plan these as a single, sequenced skin protocol rather than booking them in isolation, which protects healing windows and avoids over-treatment.

Treatment Details

What It Treats

BBL is used at Array to treat sun-induced pigmentation, age spots, freckles, generalised redness, broken capillaries and the early visible signs of ageing on the face, neck, chest, hands, arms and legs. It also calms active breakouts and the redness associated with them, and reduces unwanted hair on selected areas of the body.

Treatment Areas

Most patients treat the face, with full face, face and neck, or face, neck and décolletage being the most requested combinations at Array. BBL HERO is also used to treat the chest, shoulders, hands, arms and legs through the ForeverBody protocol, which addresses pigmentation and sun damage on the body.

Benefits

A course of BBL produces clearer, brighter, more even-toned skin, with measurable reductions in pigmentation, redness and sun damage. Results build over two to four weeks per session, and a typical three-session course delivers improvements that last twelve months or longer when paired with daily SPF and a clinician-led skincare routine afterwards.

What to Expect

Each pulse of broadband light feels like a brief warm flick against the skin, well tolerated by most patients without anaesthetic cream. Sessions take 30 to 45 minutes depending on the area treated. Pigmented spots will look darker for two to seven days before flaking off naturally, which is the visible sign that the treatment has reached its target. Redness typically settles within hours.

Safety and Side Effects

BBL is a well-established and FDA cleared light therapy, with most side effects limited to short-lived warmth, mild redness or temporary darkening of treated pigment. Rarely, blistering or pigmentary change can occur, which is why a clinician-led skin assessment is required before every course at our RQIA-regulated Belfast clinic.

Aftercare

After your session, avoid direct sun exposure and apply a high-factor mineral sunscreen daily for at least two weeks. Skip retinoids, exfoliating acids and active serums for forty-eight hours, and keep your skincare gentle. Treated pigmentation will darken before lifting off naturally over the following days, and you should let it shed without picking.

FAQ

How does it work?

The BBL HERO ForeverBody treatment, from Sciton, uses intense pulsed light to target the pigment within the skin. It flashes specialised light as it is quickly moved across the treatment area. The pigment is initially darkened, helping you know that you had an optimal treatment. Within the next several days, your body’s natural healing process will remove the pigmented cells and replace them with fresh, new, undamaged cells.

How comfortable is the treatment?

Each flash of the light produces a feeling of warmth. Most patients easily tolerate the feeling without needing any anaesthetic numbing cream.

How long does it take to see results?

This can vary depending on the individual, the area being treated, and the settings used. However, most patients see results in 2-4 weeks.

What is the post care?

It is important that you wear a physical barrier sunscreen, clothing, and limit your sun exposure after your treatment.

How many treatments will I need?

You will see results from a single treatment. However, the number of treatments will depend on the severity of your pigmentation concerns. A typical patient requires a three-session course.

Will my pigmentation get worse before it gets better?

No. Treated pigment darkens for two to seven days as the light pulse breaks it down, then flakes off naturally as the skin heals. The darkening is the visible sign the treatment has reached its target.

Is BBL suitable for darker skin tones?

Broadband light therapy is best suited to Fitzpatrick skin types I to IV. Skin types V and VI carry a higher risk of pigmentary side effects and are treated with alternative platforms following clinical assessment.

How does BBL compare to standard IPL?

The BBL HERO platform delivers higher peak power and tighter wavelength control than conventional IPL devices. That means shorter sessions, more consistent results and one of the most advanced versions of broadband light technology in clinical use.

Can I have BBL if I have rosacea?

Yes. Broadband light is one of the most effective in-clinic treatments for the diffuse redness and visible vessels associated with rosacea. A clinician-led assessment is essential to rule out an active flare before your first session.

When should I avoid BBL?

Light therapy is not suitable during pregnancy, on recently tanned skin, over active cold sores, or while taking photosensitising medication. Your clinician will go through your full medical history with you to make sure the treatment is suitable.
